To start the 2024 schedule, tremendously happy here to be able to present Masayuki Imanishi‘s 2nd work for the Unfathomless series…

U82 Masayuki Imanishi | Asphalt/Concrete CD (special & regular edition)/Digital

Based in Osaka (Japan), Masayuki has pursued his own musical path, constantly remaining in alert to what could be of use in his immediate environment…Keeping record of found sounds, aural textures, fugitive impressions, he transforms them through various manipulations in a very “musique concrete” way…His audio arsenal includes contact microphones, tape recorder, objects, field recordings, radio, etc…He released previously on INI.ITU, the now defunct Philip Sulidae’s label, Hemisphäreの空虚, Moving Furniture, Superpang, Tsss Tapes, to name but a few, and indulged into various collaborations…On “Asphalt/Concrete“, Masayuki probes his surroundings to a great extent, extracting subtle sounds, morphing them into a dazzling soundtrack made of a weave of reframed everyday sounds drifting at the fringes, shaped to percolate our subconscious and break the bonds..…motors make hulls tremble, gurgling water skims metal…A chain of extrasensory riveting sonic elements…”Asphalt/Concreteunveils a breathing detailed amplified world of significant scoria, acting like some vibrissae capturing inner vibes…This sound universe inhales, sometimes corroded air, or stale breezes from worn out ventilation shafts…an almost liturgical cartography of impalpable ramifications…, a sort of second reading identifying what lies behind, below, and beyond…”Asphalt/Concretedecomposes our reality, recombining it in evoking aural fragments alternating soft and coarse tones, bringing nevertheless to our minds a sense of peace, in connection to some invisible, erratic laws…Masayuki Imanishi drags you in, deeper than ever, making you travel to some unknown shores, across the rippling waves, the folds – again astoundingly galvanizing

And then, as 2nd title, we have this staggering dream collab between manja ristić and murmer (a.k.a. Patrick McGinley)…

U83  manja ristić and murmer | the scaffold CD (special and regular edition)/Digital

Serbian Manja Ristić is probably one of the most active & engrossing interdisciplinary sound artist within the experimental music scene and beyond…no way to list all her accomplishments so far…(you can refer to her official bio for that). Suffice to say that besides being a sound artist, she’s also a violinist, published poet, curator and researcher, and that Korčula (Croatia) where she lives has often been the pivotal point of her sound explorations and practices…she’s really an uttermost sentient being, and this infuses clearly her music. Her discography is consequently quite extended, and hold releases on labels such as Line, Flag Day Recordings, Dasa Tapes, Framework seasonal, to name but a few…Patrick McGinley/murmer‘s ID card is as well furnished, being in activity since long years…American sound artist within Europe since 1996 and relocated in Estonia since 2009, he used to compose music for theatre performances and is clearly a lover of found sounds and objects. For those that don’t know, he co-founded Framework which produces a weekly radio show on London’s Resonance 104.fm…With a peculiar aptitude for catching sounds often escaping our attention, he re-frames them in new context, bringing his audience to a universal awareness of place…murmer‘s work has been a constant search for highlighting small sonic occurrences, and arouse focused listening. His work has been published on labels such as Helen Scarsdale Agency, Gruenrekorder, Drone, Taâlem, ICR, etc…”the scaffold is delving into the depths of a mythic well, bringing all its wonders back to the surface along a slow raising, rubbing the components, letting the particles circulate, caressing the air…it creates an halo of diffuse presences lingering like ghostsmanja ristić and murmer join their delicate synergetic actions that induce a phenomenon of ascension…precious gestures, stars within stars, ecstatic faces…stirred gravel, tiny streams of rippling water, wind as punctuation – perhaps a primordial meditation on how to bounce back…”the scaffold is like a rite of renascence in a decrepit humid church with all its stained-glass windows broken…rain glides on metal, wood cracks…
One listens and starts to hear an almost redemptive sacred humming,
an hazy incantation erasing all moments of despair, opening the gates, making us feel attuned…”the scaffoldblends disparate voices into a ceremony of regenerationa path to amazement

Richard Allen pens a well weighed, “to the point” review for A Closer Listen. He sees “étang donné” as a yearning for a shelter in a so unstable world, but more than that also as an outlet to keep our wonder capacity intact by reevaluating the close…beyond the simple reflection of a pond, this is a deep personal painting inviting to projection

Second review addressing philip sulidae‘s “Vandemonian Verplaatsing” from the always dedicated Richard Allen for A Closer Listen. There in he points out that without real context this clever assemblage of sounds seems to map a new world of possibilities, being kind of self-fertilising as well as perhaps an apt metaphor for that feeling of constant surrounding instability  …
