Second review addressing philip sulidae‘s “Vandemonian Verplaatsing” from the always dedicated Richard Allen for A Closer Listen. There in he points out that without real context this clever assemblage of sounds seems to map a new world of possibilities, being kind of self-fertilising as well as perhaps an apt metaphor for that feeling of constant surrounding instability  …

First report in regarding new philip sulidae‘s opus for the Unfathomless series comes from Frans de Waard (as often) with a watchful plunge into “Vandemonian Verplaatsing” where he concludes to something that exceeds the sum of its parts, and beyond the traditional field recordings approach

U66 philip sulidae | Vandemonian Verplaatsing CD/Digital

So enthusiastic to welcome again Philip Sulidae in the Unfathomless catalog. When he’s at the helm, one knows the audio-journey will be multilevelled, rich, and replayable ad infinitum. With several years of practice, his very specific brew of musique concrete tinted field recordings, and vast array of assemblage techniques and recording methods always lead to the advent of complex, riveting sound pieces challenging and enlarging our perceptive threshold
On “Vandemonian Verplaatsing“, he kind of exorcises his recent move from Australia (Sydney), to Tasmania (Hobart) by sketching an intangible map, a ghost psycho-cartography questioning reality through displacement. Layers end up blended, distorted, remodelled to form a new language of strange scriptures and spectral traces. Emerges a quasi tactile landscape abounding in life, faint signals, indecipherable fragments condensing in a beaming mass of energy aural projections…

…”Vandemonian Verplaatsing” could be about making junction between your own fictive spaces and real visited places – a way of sublimating, escaping the grinding daily routine…

Stir the dust, feel the air around, learn from the accidents and this uneven but so fertile ground

U67 simon whetham | dry CD/Digital

After close to 10 years since “mall muzak” (U07), and looking how far he has come in sound exploration, we could only secretly hope for Simon Whetham‘s return in the Unfathomless series, and this is the day ! It’d be far too long to expose Simon’s curriculum vitae, or try to give a complete overview of all what he has been involved in so far. Unrepentant traveller in the pre-Covid years, he has honeyed his sound art into contact with the world, ever questioning his own sound practice. Always in love with the raw sound phenomenon itself, he hunts down less apparent sonic features, often examinating them within a site-specific context. More recently, he he has shown a lot of interest in dismantling daily, disused objects, and manipulating their components to extract sonic traces, the aura of sounds itself.
on “dry“, beyond the man/nature confrontational aspects, and environmental implications, Simon invites us to step into the physical properties of water under artificial hydraulic conditions.
At times soft, subdued, then virulent, the experienced flow is highly dynamic, full of transitions, tonal disruptions, coalescing in a sort of semi underground litany of vibrational resonances fed on metallic sighs, matter against matter rubbings…a clearly invigorating trip where the loss of landmarks and disorientation leads to a paradoxical self-consolidation

Following the flux and its delineations becomes rapidly a magnetic occupation of re-centering
From the open to the closed, we adapt our reality, remembering the force of life, feeling stronger…

“dry” pushes you, sets you literally in motion – a revitalizing soundtrack

U48 Philip Sulidae | Ramshead CD

…curled up in Sydney’s recesses, Philip Sulidae has worked on the fringes of field recording, musique concrete, and dark cinematic ambience for years…along his already long course, he has refined his straightaway singular approach, applying subtle electronic treatments, and varying methods to his sound captures to ultimately forge fascinating quasi audio-tactile pieces prone to make us drift into zones of great mystery like in the best David Lynch sequences…

Ramshead” is a perceptual encounter of sometimes arid, sometimes fertile granular uncommon beauty…

…when the collecting of field recordings within an unusual australian mountainous & sub-mountainous landscape of epic proportion leads , through a transformative process, to an inner journey of the highest order – this is probably Philip Sulidae at his best yet, his audio scraps and intricate textural composition have never sounded so vivid thanks to James Plotkin’s sharp dynamic mastering…”Ramsheadspreads into subterranean stirrings, crackle of matter, elemental compost, close to the primal effervescence of life itself

U49 Yiorgis Sakellariou | in Aulis CD

Yiorgis Sakellariou  has scoured many seas since 15 years, channeling his experimental/electro-acoustic intense sound compositions towards his audience with sheer passion either through theatre, films, workshops or performances in pitch black…

Focusing to be deeply in tune with the environments he explores, Yiorgis gives voices back to specific loci, setting off a close bound with them…

…diving into the ancient history and allegories of his own land, Yiorgis came up with this haunting soundscape inspired by the ruins of a temple dedicated to Artemis…building a bridge between the past and the present, and permeating himself with this decrepit holy ground, he managed to capture something quasi-supernatural
a definitely powerful contemplative work

air is hot, stones breath, frontiers fall, antique voices are freed
