Let’s start with a work initially scheduled to appear on Philip Sulidae’s now on hiatus ebullient label, Hemisphäreの空虚…Philip told me it was top notch, and could fit in easily with Unfathomless’ signature, and it did all the way… U78 « peregrination » is doubtless an impacting sensitive work from Standard Grey a.k.a. Christopher Olson, a quite discreet yet experienced fellow and Canadian expatriate living since about 10 years in Nara (Japan) …versed into graphic arts, and of course, experimental and field recording based work, coloured by tape & musique concrète techniques. He’s also the former curator for Muzan editions, and has quite a bunch of releases out on such labels as Falt, Audio.Visuals.Atmosphere, Modern Concern, and Steep Gloss to name but a few… « peregrination »is a plunge into the intangible, and a compendium of his ceaseless wanderings in his past perfused vicinity – a sort of intimate log, holding more than just sketches, but rather elaborate sentient sound narrations taking us by the hand and heart… « peregrination » is activating, it makes old grounds crunch, waking millennial soil spirits…ghost winds roam in the quivering air, while savage cuts rip the glades…much of a procession recounting perhaps an ancient filigree world… Cascades of pulses, bouncing back and forth, hints of disguised distress… Animal instinct, buried streams, a flow of past knowledge running till oblivion… On « peregrination », an erasing breeze pervades and all words fade…
Listening to the smallest of murmurs of a damaged, yet sacred panorama, we step aside, along, then slowly, find a meaning, a purpose… Let yourself glide in, feel the outlines of an immutable landscape full of sense…

Very proud also to be able to give body to U79 Bruno Duplant & David Vélez | des-illusions, a release of moving scope… Continuing to pursue his dedicated singular path, french northerner composer and psychogeographer Bruno Duplant uses his talent to blur the lines and create intense fictional evocations, and teams up again for his 6th collaboration with Colombian sound artist David Vélez who is now endowed with a PHD in sonic art…curator as well of the long term, and persistently absorbing Impulsive Habitat label, David has a keen interest in environmental contextualism, acoustics of food and horticulture, and generally in the way we experience sound (as shown with his latest installation « Bones » created with sine waves & field recordings, inviting us to listen through our skull)… Very anxious about the state of this world, both resort to erosive methods, and diverse tattered instrumentation to shape a questioning musical poem of sweeping grandeur… « des-illusions » unfolds an enduring circling yet gradually decaying chant under ominous clouds… A lonesome organ emits a few warning notes tearing the day apart while we hear shards of voices on a background of slowed down, dragging on tones… Percussive clatter, muffled church bell and other urban signals… A devious threnody seeps in, layers of tactile shifting sounds form dust dreams, stars alight in the backyard… The road is long, partially broken, some haunted marimba draws silver-grey furrows, ginned notes let a ringing charm fuse…Imagine a much less minimal and layered William Basinski passing through an old projector…
« des-illusions » decimates the last rays of hope, but deceptive mood never sounded so gorgeous… Could something precious still exist in the crumbs ?…

First comes a second opus in the series from the quite prolific Tokyoite sound artist Leo Okagawa. Back also to his main love for field recordings transmuted via collage, layering, and dusting with a thin lamination of noises and electrical tones, here he weaves an harbour canvas which goes beyond the sum of its parts…

“minato” bewitches us straight on with its opening siren call and gentle lapping waves, and its false sense of lull slyly evolving in a bass roar of ghost motors and shrieking frictions of metallic containers singing their ode to consumption, only to coalesce in a ballet of resonating subsignals and deep rumble…

“minato” reads like an ECG of various port activities where “breathings” of all sorts expose their own frail language ; this a voyage on unstable bridges underlining the erratic chant of elements and clusters of objects…

a scalpel like port-rait of a huge commonplace infrastructure fed on famous naval past and cargos of memories, the whole sublimated at an elegiac level…
A way of looking differently at, where delicate layout contributes to forge a complete perhaps somehow redemptive story…

U73  Stéphane Marin | tres fronteras CD/Digital

Second title on display, and second opus as well in the series, comes from sound hunter, practitioner and composer, Stéphane Marin who is deeply involved in setting up atypical spaces to present recontextualized sound experiences. He has besides created a company to this end named “Espaces Sonores” in 2008…On its menu are : listening walks, yoga for the ears, sound naps, etc…or as many possibilities to approach sound under a different perspective. Stéphane Marin is also an apologist of field recordings based compositions which serve as a true trigger to something that transcends the ordinary…

Forget all what you have learned and your clichés about the Amazon rainforest and its vast, complex, adjacent territories, as Stéphane has compounded here a condensed form of hallucinogenic journey, not in a numbing but awakening way…

“tres fonteras” equals crossing a threshold, and opening your ears to receive a feedback of vivid visions and amazement…with the morning rise, nocturnal slumber dissolves, at the “base camp”, roosters crow, chickens chuckle, insects chatter, trees and vegetation rustle and emit cracks…seemingly in the distance, afterwards dangerously close, howler monkeys start their impressive vocalisations gradually fading into their environment…from there on, “tres fronteras” turns into all swirls for the senses, using sounds as stimuli to take us on a poetic path of no return…this is the REAL world, and everything else becomes pointless…

“tres fronteras” is a stone thrown at our unconcerned “waters”, a pinch, a slap, an upside- down manoeuvre…most of all, a sound system to activate us, veer us away from the fake…

“Quiet !“, lay down, absorb, feel, and come up if only a notch…

U70 philippe neau | étang donné CD/Digital

Coming across philippe neau‘s global aesthetic universe and his penchant for creating new fictional spaces from various visual/sound sources and materials gradually encouraged me to consider a contribution of him to the Unfathomless series…philippe neau is a plastic artist and teacher as well as a painter. He has several exhibitions, installations under his belt, and quite an array of soundworks on various labels such as Attenuation Circuit, Plus Timbre, Sonospace, to name but a few…

“étang donné” has been shaped as clay on a potter’s lathe in a ritualistic sort of way, a kind of exorcism of a familiar place wandered so many times…a pool caught in a loop…

“étang donné” is the result of circular walks, many superimposing sketches and solid notes transmuting in a genuine aural painting…Equipped with some light recording device (mainly his phone !), philippe neau lets the surrounding nature sink in.

“étang donné” makes us fade away into the tiny details of the environment, in touch with it, breathing the stones, soil, puddles and grass in, leading us on paths of remembrance…complicit murmurs, twigs in the breeze, rustles declinations, the pool becomes a transfixing mirror of our own reiterations and frailties…a soft, yet confounding ambulation…

U71  juan josé calarco | poleas CD/Digital

Along the years, I’ve never ceased to be impressed by juan josé calarco‘s meticulous, vivid, absorbing soundscapes, and after so long, and 2 previous albums in the Unfathomless series, I’m singularly pleased to welcome him back for another long anticipated album.

I won’t be exhaustive regarding his career – suffice to say, he has been a cornerstone of the local Argentinian experimental music “scene” as co-curator of the so inspiring field recordings oriented Impulsive Habitat label, and the figurehead of Papaki Records, as well as having many releases (both solo and collaborations), all of which stamped with his distinctive auditory qualities…These unique qualities rely on an uncommon sentient aptitude for magnifying the invisible, the elusive, the hidden…

“poleas” focuses mainly on a specific railway section, and its close environment, encapsulating motion itself, capturing the surrounding air charged with untamed electricity, obscure signals and interferences…

“poleas” unfolds mostly horizontally, feeding itself on the audio dregs of all surfaces, nooks, passages along the way, with trains & carriages striking through space in frictional tones along rattling fences in semi industrial/housing zones…A brooding chant of volatile energies, buzzes and nascent rhythms, against a backdrop of ghostly communications, indecipherable vibes and electromagnetic pulses…

“poleas” is a key to unlock our often numbed senses, reach unexpected levels of perception and unveil subworlds…
