Coming across philippe neau‘s global aesthetic universe and his penchant for creating new fictional spaces from various visual/sound sources and materials gradually encouraged me to consider a contribution of him to the Unfathomless series…philippe neau is a plastic artist and teacher as well as a painter. He has several exhibitions, installations under his belt, and quite an array of soundworks on various labels such as Attenuation Circuit, Plus Timbre, Sonospace, to name but a few…

“étang donné” has been shaped as clay on a potter’s lathe in a ritualistic sort of way, a kind of exorcism of a familiar place wandered so many times…a pool caught in a loop…

“étang donné” is the result of circular walks, many superimposing sketches and solid notes transmuting in a genuine aural painting…Equipped with some light recording device (mainly his phone !), philippe neau lets the surrounding nature sink in.

“étang donné” makes us fade away into the tiny details of the environment, in touch with it, breathing the stones, soil, puddles and grass in, leading us on paths of remembrance…complicit murmurs, twigs in the breeze, rustles declinations, the pool becomes a transfixing mirror of our own reiterations and frailties…a soft, yet confounding ambulation…

Along the years, I’ve never ceased to be impressed by juan josé calarco‘s meticulous, vivid, absorbing soundscapes, and after so long, and 2 previous albums in the Unfathomless series, I’m singularly pleased to welcome him back for another long anticipated album.

I won’t be exhaustive regarding his career – suffice to say, he has been a cornerstone of the local Argentinian experimental music “scene” as co-curator of the so inspiring field recordings oriented Impulsive Habitat label, and the figurehead of Papaki Records, as well as having many releases (both solo and collaborations), all of which stamped with his distinctive auditory qualities…These unique qualities rely on an uncommon sentient aptitude for magnifying the invisible, the elusive, the hidden…

“poleas” focuses mainly on a specific railway section, and its close environment, encapsulating motion itself, capturing the surrounding air charged with untamed electricity, obscure signals and interferences…

“poleas” unfolds mostly horizontally, feeding itself on the audio dregs of all surfaces, nooks, passages along the way, with trains & carriages striking through space in frictional tones along rattling fences in semi industrial/housing zones…A brooding chant of volatile energies, buzzes and nascent rhythms, against a backdrop of ghostly communications, indecipherable vibes and electromagnetic pulses…
