U76 Eamon Sprod & David Prescott-Steed | crawlspace CD/Digital

U76_ESDPS_crawlspace_front

first newie up is Eamon Sprod and David Prescott-Steed‘s dazzling encounter with a very specific hollow underground tunnel…
Eamon Sprod, working usually under his Tarab moniker, is an Australian sound artist creating re-contextualized dynamic recordings, carefully combined fragmentary frames of sound, mostly based on found objects, discarded junk and selected leftovers, that, to generate visceral sensations as well as an increased awareness towards explored sites…Although, close to the field recording practice, this is also veering off from it…The result is compositions that stem from the interstices inducing narratives at an angle…Often the wandered space itself becomes the speaker, inside and outside meet…Eamon is currently a doctoral researcher in related matters…
David Prescott-Steed is also from Melbourne/Australia, a writer, a teacher, and most of all a field recordist, versed in urbex, experimental music and sound art…His discography comprises releases such as for Green Field Recordings, and Impulsive Habitat
Quite natural thus for them to join forces for some common deep tunnel-esque exploration…
Wild heat, night insects, and then, a lid flips up, unveiling an entry to a large duct and dark space…
Steps and their echoes weave the initial rhythm, gradually the setting becomes parcelled via frictions, breaks, clashing resonances…All leads to the capture of a damp shut place…A cascade of drips, vibrations spread surreptitiously into the walls, small detonating/percussive actions bring the tunnel alive…Bodies shape the sounds, and sounds shape our bodies…An ongoing compelling exercise in apprehending the visible & invisible, the intertwined
Getting seemingly lost, yet newfound, becoming our gestures, becoming the surrounding space…realizing, de-realizing…
Above our heads, other things at play, muffled tones, another bundle of perspectives…
crawlspaceis incisive, worming its way like a cut inside, opening up derived ways and bias approachesa suggestive x-ray of the not easily accessiblea sometimes paradoxically phantasmal burst essay, a compendium of subterranean occurrences…”crawlspacedrags us imperturbably into the unlit folds, causing a jolt, a rupture of the anodyne
much as it ends in fading away, reverberating splashes, it stays beyond comprehension, definitely offbeat, but so ingrainedAn unravelling plot

U77  João Castro Pinto | faux naturel CD/Digital

U77_Joao Castro Pinto_faux naturel_front

Let’s welcome João Castro Pinto‘s 2nd opus for the Unfathomless series, which frankly, appears as another major work in his career…
Having forged a rather personal trajectory since the 2nd half of the 1990s in experimental music, he is operating at the intersection of soundscape composition and electroacoustic/acousmatic genre, showing a large scope of vivid interests, and being the receptacle of some serious academic praise, he’s graduated in philosophy, and is completing a phd in science and technology of the arts…He has travelled, performed worldwide, collaborated with many artists, and he’s currently also doing quite a bit of sound work for films and theatre companies. As I know him, I can tell that he’s really devoted to sounds, honing them further and further, and on the path of excellence – definitely not a featherweight…

With water as unifier element, “faux naturelis a succession of nascent points, points of emergence, stemming mainly from frictions, rubbing of realitiesLife blooms from the juxtaposition of crucial vibes & tonesIt is about reconciliation on all levels, finding a way in-between in a sort appeased, though so powerful motion
Perhaps a strive for the essence of things, a festival of sounds inviting us to an hidden harmony, to open the curtain, and grasp what lies within
faux naturel” is the key to permanent discovery, a work of total generosity and truthfulness
A quasi natural chant, and ode to the world in its complex scheme…a soothing aural trip evaluating all the forces at work…simply listen, breathe in, get absorbed into all the distinct, yet tangled up directions, and drift on the waves
João Castro Pinto could well be one of the ultimate “boatmen”, with a lot to tell…
faux naturel freezes the trembling lines, fixing impermanence, trying to picture something larger than its frame…and close to the end, when bells start to ring in superimposing layers, we know we’re in for some communion, and inches of redemption
