Venezulean, Caracas based sound artist & composer Gil Sansón has been active for more than 20 years in a relative anonymity, both solo and in long distance collaborations with Bruno Duplant, or Lance Austin Olsen, for instance. Despite this discreet status, his work has received many accolades…actually, maybe the core or main goal of it, is to question and override frontiers…whatever, he has a way of his own, and meticulously crafts his sonic creations, giving them the time to blossom… After a long pending invitation to compose something specific for the Unfathomless series, he has finally delivered a cathartic audio-journey, blending astutely past vivid NY memories, archival material, and recent recordings made in his urban vicinity… With “con richard (por la adversidad a las estrellas)“, we have some sort of vast, reverberating, almost nocturnal opera urbain…remote stray dogs, roaring cars, buzz of the city, elongated or elliptical electric pulses and hisses…a flux of resonances, and subdued motorik rhythms…It sounds all hollow, and paradoxically so all-encompassing…Districts breathe at night…in the background, small looped patterns, cuts and modulations…An always circling, changing, wave after wave continuum… “con richard (por la adversidad a las estrellas)” sucks us irremediably in, making us become a full part of this withdrawn environment… As much as our remembrances crumble, our world steadily disintegrates along a concrete symphony of aural scraps…for sure, a poignant metaphor for decay, but all sublimated in a chorus of veiled hope…a sound design of maximal amplitude, and definitely a revealer…

Sometimes, even in small niches, introduction is needless, especially with sound artists whose career can only inspire respect…This is beyond doubt the case with Jeph Jerman who has experimented and sharpened his listening along years and years of practice, and wandering…Always auscultating his environment, and probably even deeper since he’s living in Arizona and close to the desert, he records his surroundings, creating and composing with what lies at hand, and the found objects along his expeditions, but also, with damaged tape, discarded bits from past works, sometimes re-playing, and re-recording the sounds themselves in situ…His high skilled and extremely focused improvisational technique has led him to collaborate with lots of like minded artists…He has assiduously self-released tons of material, and has a presence on many independent labels…After the striking “imbrication“, so delighted to welcome him again on the Unfathomless series, with another gripping new work. In “registro de piedra“, Jeph literally captures air and heat, touching the very heart of old stones, squeezing out from those perhaps long preserved memories, paths to unravel…Out in the distance, motors seem to purr…An array of rubbings activate gravel, dust, dried vegetation, signs on the trail…We seem to hear dismembered voices on the altar of this wilderness and the scars of the landscape…Ghost chants of oblivion surge, suspended echoes of the past…”registro de piedra“ renders absences present, awakens what lies asleep…a confluence of elements, a dance of micro-frictions opening plains of possibilities…”registro de piedra” reads its setting, the bumps and cavities, the edges and disfigurements, proposing a global approach of full consciousness…the bedrock of an enlightening experience…
