Almost 17 years back, and under the moniker of Whitebass, Clinton Watkins carved a remarkable aural “vessel” of impressive, subsonic scope, aptly named “depth of field” for my previous Mystery Sea label…such a long time after, it’s an utter privilege to work with him again…
Clinton has a serious CV, and is the holder of a doctoral degree in Fine Arts. He’s a lecturer at both the Elam School of Fine Arts and the University of Technology in Auckland, and produces audiovisual immersive experiences for galleries and exhibitions…more recently, he has been working as a composer and sound designer for the artist collective FIELD RECORDINGS…most of all, he has been associated with the New Zealand experimental music scene for over 20 years with quite a bunch of published releases on the likes of Circle, 20 City, Claudia, Mystery Sea, CMR, Absurd among others…he also performed all over the world…
…“Raaswater” is a distillation of many hours of recordings made while participating to the Sonic Mmabolela 2018 residency directed by Francisco Lopez...And regarding immersion, it is indeed a particular rapture, as it succeeds in bringing out the very pulse of Life itself through a non linear rhythm acting as an almost invisible spine to the whole composition framed in 11 parts…
in “Raaswater” the liquid element is a ghost presence, rivers arms are dried up, the environment is arid, though far from dead…wind activates fences, metal clinks, hyenas yelp, white sun bleached bones crush under the soles, insects chatter, an ubiquitous daytime chant, and a nocturnal spellbinding effluence…
This is an alignment with the echoing vastness – a venous earth-beat…evaporation turned into imprint, a map of signs to help grasp at full extent…an intoxicating inescapable lament…
